China approves TCM-based new drug for type 2 diabetes

BEIJING, April 20 (Xinhua) -- China has granted market access to a new anti-diabetic drug derived from traditional Chinese medicine, according to the National Medical Products Administration.

The antidiabetic drug, Mulberry Twig Alkaloids Tablet, is extracted from mulberry twig and can be used for treating type 2 diabetes. It marks China's first approved traditional Chinese medicine for diabetes in the past 10 years. The marketing authorization holder of the drug is Beijing Wehand-Bio Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of the drug were led by the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and results showed that the drug can effectively reduce the level of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), a key measure of diabetes control in type 2 diabetes patients.
