JINAN, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The water table of Baotu Spring, a famous scenic spot in Jinan, capital of eastern China's Shandong Province, has continued to fall below the orange warning line of 28 meters since mid-March, data from local water authority showed.

Baotu Spring is reputed as the finest among the 72 famous springs in Jinan, also known as China's "City of Springs," for its spectacle of three springs gushing into the sky.

On May 5, the water table of Baotu Spring dropped to 27.62 meters, slightly higher than the red warning line of 27.6 meters, the highest level of the three-tier warning system.

The groundwater level of spring water in Jinan is mainly affected by precipitation. The current groundwater level of Baotu Spring in the dry season is normal and will gradually rise after entering the flood season.

Baotu Spring began to see seasonal hiccups in the early 1970s and once dried up for a 926-day period. It has been gushing for more than 16 years since September 2003 when it started to spout again after a series of actions were taken to improve natural water supplies and increase artificial rainfall.
