BERLIN, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The German supermarket chain Aldi will open its first stores in China in the city of Shanghai, Aldi confirmed earlier media reports to Xinhua on Friday.

A company spokesperson told Xinhua that Aldi China was preparing to open its first two pilot stores in Shanghai on June 7.

The German Lebensmittelzeitung and Manager Magazin first reported that Aldi is planning to open at least 10 stores in China, with 50 to 100 further outlets to follow in the coming years.

According to the Lebensmittelzeitung, the German supermarket chain will present itself in China with a much higher quality range of products than in its home market Germany, where Aldi stirred up the supermarket business with its discount model.

For the Chinese market, Aldi would rely heavily on imported goods that were highly valued in China. According to German media reports, the Shanghai stores will offer Aldi's traditional range of products imported from Europe, and will also feature large fresh fish counters.

Aldi China launched its flagship digital store on the Tmall.com platform in 2017 and has successively expanded its range of products and services since then.

According to trade expert Matthias Queck of LZ Retailytics, Aldi is already the undisputed leader against its German rival Lidl with its global expansion, especially in the U.S. and Australia.

"This is a further step in the race between Aldi and Lidl worldwide," trade expert Queck told the German press agency dpa.
