JERUSALEM, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Israeli police shot dead a man who was said trying to stab Israeli forces in a Palestinian town in the Jerusalem District on Monday, as U.S. President Donald Trump was visiting the city.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said the suspect attempted to stab paramilitary Border Police officers at a checkpoint outside the Palestinian town of Abu Dis.

She said that the suspect was shot and died of his wounds at the scene.

His identity was not immediately clear, Samri said.

The incident came a few hours after President of the U.S. Donald Trump arrived in Israel on his official visit.

In a meeting with President Reuven Rivlin in Jerusalem, Trump called for peace between Israel and the Palestinians and attacked Iran as a major "threat" to the U.S. and Israel.

He is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at 18:00 (GMT1500), and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem on Tuesday.
