NEW DELHI, May 24 (Xinhua) -- At least two persons were killed and eight others injured after a private mini-bus rolled off the road and overturned in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh Wednesday, a senior police official said.

"The accident occurred in the hilly state's Solan district this afternoon when the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve. The bus was carrying some 17 passengers," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While two persons were killed on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital, the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he said, adding that prima facie it seemed to be the fault of the driver who was speeding.

"Eye-witnesses told us that the mini-bus was travelling at a high speed," the official added.

The hilly state, which is popular with tourists, witnesses accidents often.

Last month, at least 44 people were killed when a bus in which they were travelling plunged off a mountain road in Himachal Pradesh and fell into a river.

Road accidents are common in India, often due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles. More than 400 people are killed in accidents on Indian roads every day, according to official statistics.
