KIGALI, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda's Ministry of Infrastructure Tuesday said around 555 million U.S. dollars have been earmarked for water and sanitation provision in race to ensure universal coverage by year 2020.

Speaking at a dissemination of water and sanitation policies meeting in Kigali, officials said water supply policy implementation strategy was allocated about 400 million U.S. dollars over previous 2015/16 financial year up to 2020.

In sanitation, the government has earmarked over 155 million U.S. dollars toward infrastructure development over the next five year period.

Aime Muzora, Director of planning at Rwanda's ministry of infrastructure explained that the 2010 policy was revised in order to achieve a target of 100 percent water and sanitation coverage.

Water coverage stands at 49 percent of the population served within 500 meters, according to Rwanda's latest Integrated Household Living Conditions Survey 2014 while sanitation coverage with safe and hygienic environment is estimated at 58 percent in 2015.

Muzora said the government seeks to privatize rural water networks to be managed by private operators to facilitate faster maintenance of damaged networks. Enditem
