COPENHAGEN, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The Danish government presented on Wednesday its new foreign and security policy strategy for the next two years of 2017 and 2018.

The strategy, following from the extensive 2016 review of Denmark's foreign policy and covering all areas of the government's foreign policy work, was presented by Minister for Foreign Affairs Anders Samuelsen and Minister for Development Cooperation Ulla Toernaes.

The strategy identifies five main challenges in the coming years: migration, instability and terrorism; security in Denmark and the surrounding region; Brexit and the future of the EU; seizing the opportunities of globalization; and the Arctic.

"The world looks very different compared to only three or four years ago -- or, in fact, even just one year ago," Samuelsen said.

"In many respects, life has improved for many, but there are also many areas where we are moving in the wrong direction: freedom and free trade is under threat, migration is challenging Europe's stability, authoritarian forces are gaining power and international cooperation is being questioned," he added.

Samuelsen said more resources would be dedicated in the coming years to address these issues, with the goal of less terror, more freedom and more free trade.

He maintained that Denmark should take more responsibility through measures such as increasing defense spending, counteracting Russian cyber warfare and intensifying efforts in neighboring areas to conflict and crisis zones. Enditem
