U.S. Navy destroyer collides with merchant vessel off coast of Japan

WASHINGTON, June 16 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. Navy destroyer collided with a merchant vessel off the coast of Japan early Saturday morning local time, the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet said.

The collision happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time on Saturday when USS Fitzgerald was operating about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan, said a statement by the U.S. Navy.

"The extent of damage is being determined. The extent of personnel injuries is being determined. The incident will be investigated," said the statement, adding that the U.S. Navy has requested Japanese Coast Guard assistance in responding to the collision.
