BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Torrential rain pounding south China started to weaken Monday while a heat wave spread across the country, the meteorological agency said.

The National Meteorological Center (NMC) lifted the blue alert of torrential rain for Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guangdong Province in south China. But heavy rain is expected in Yunnan, Sichuan and other parts of south China.

Parts of Guangxi and Guangdong will continue to receive torrential rain, the agency forecast, adding heavy rain will hit southwest China's Sichuan Basin during July 5-8.

The agency also forecast the heat wave will spread further south. Parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hubei and Sichuan provinces and Chongqing Municipality will see temperatures rise above 37 to 39 degrees centigrade, with some areas surpassing 40.

The public should take precautions against the heat wave, the agency said, adding children and elderly are recommended to stay indoors.
