Taliban key commander among 5 killed in Afghan eastern Laghman province

MEHTARLAM, Afghanistan, July 11 (Xinhua) -- A Taliban key commander Azam Gul is among five militants killed in the eastern Laghman province on Tuesday, said a statement of provincial government released here.

"A group of militants stormed some police checkpoints in Alishing district today morning and the security forces returned fire killing five rebels including Taliban notorious commander Azam Gul on the spot and injured six others," the statement said.

It also admitted that two police had been killed and five more sustained injuries in the fighting which lasted for a couple of hours.

Azam Gul, according to the statement, was involved in organizing attacks on security forces, organizing roadside bombs and targeting government interests and his physical elimination could prove a major blow to the Taliban fighters in Laghman and adjoining Nangarhar provinces.

Taliban militants are yet to make comment on the report.
