Namibia hails Chinese aid for boosting education at national university

WINDHOEK, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Capital injection and technical support by China to the Namibian tertiary education fraternity has transformed academic prosperity at the University of Namibia (UNAM), said Lazarus Hangula, the Vice Chancellor of UNAM on Thursday.

Hangula made the remarks during the institution's annual cultural festival, which coincides with UNAM's silver jubilee celebration, adding that Chinese aid has helped the university grow into a reputable institution.

Support provided include human resources, academic funding and an agreement with the China University of Geosciences, Beijing that provide technical assistance, leadership and infrastructural support to the University of Namibia.

"Through bilateral relations between the two countries, China has provided UNAM with equipment, scholarships, professional expertise. The Confucius Institute accords a chance to Namibians seeking academic opportunities or those who wish to explore business interest in China to learn the Chinese language and culture," Hangula said.

According to Hangula, a growing portion of the University staff members also hold qualifications from Chinese Universities.

"Furthermore, collaboration in the area of high education and between research institutions in China and UNAM is growing," he added.

Meanwhile, Zhang Yiming, Chinese Ambassador to Namibia said that China wish to scale up investment in education in Namibia, which would enhance cultural exchange and cooperation between the two countries.

"There will be more scholarships that the Chinese government will provide to Namibians to study in China," he said.
