SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants overrun Kham Ab district in Afghanistan's northern Jawzjan province along the border with Turkmenistan on Monday, district governor Ahmad Khan said.

"Taliban militants overrun Kham Ab district in the wee hours of today and the district headquarters is in their control at the moment," Khan told Xinhua.

Without giving more details, the official said that the government forces had retreated.

Meantime, a spokesman for security forces in the province, Nasratullah Jamshidi, said that clash for the control of Kham Ab district has been continuing.

Taliban militants who have briefly captured some four districts in different provinces over the past couple of months are yet to make comments on the situation in Kham Ab district.

Bordering Turkmenistan, Kham Ab district's falling to the Taliban militants will enable the armed group to influence the neighboring Qarqin and Mangajek districts.
