TUNIS, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia plans to export 200,000 tons of olive oil in 2017/2018 after production more than doubled last year's harvest, the National Office of Oil of Tunisia announced on Monday.

The office's chief executive officer, Chokri Bayoudh, said that Tunisia would become the world's second largest exporter of this product after Spain.

During the season 2014/2015, Tunisia outperformed Spain, ranking top among world olive oil exporters.

Tunisian olive oil, known for its good quality, is exported to 54 markets, particularly the European Union, which receives 56,000 tons followed by the United States with 35,000 tons.

The country is also tapping in new markets including Russia, India, Japan and several African markets, said the National Office of Oil.

Until September 2017, Tunisia exported 82,000 tons of olive oil for revenues of 792 million dinars (320 million U.S. dollars) with a unit price of about 4.72 dollars per kg.

About 80 percent of the Tunisian production of olive oil is for exports.
