MMAN, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- King Abdullah II of Jordan on Sunday voiced Jordan's full support to the Palestinian reconciliation between rival factions, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

The King made the remarks at a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, where he said the deal will help enhance the Palestinian unity.

The reconciliation deal represents an important step to revive peace talks and re-launch serious and effective peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis on the basis of the two state solution leading to the creation of an independent Palestinian state at the borders of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its borders.

King Abdullah stressed that the Palestinian issue was the central issue and the core of conflict in the Middle East, adding that it is on the top of priorities of Jordan's foreign agenda.

Talks also focused on the need to intensify efforts and work with the U.S. administration to find new genuine political horizons to find a solution to the conflict and make progress on the ground in the near future, especially amidst pledges by US President Donald Trump to achieve peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Talks also focused on the developments in Jerusalem, where the two sides stressed on the need to respect the legal and historic status quo in the holy city.

In this regard, King Abdullah said Jordan will continue to play its historic role in protecting the holy Islamic and Christian sites in the city. Jordan oversees the holy sites in Jerusalem.

Abbas voiced appreciation for Jordan's continued efforts to defend the Palestinian issue and support the rights of the Palestinians at all fronts.

In remarks to the press, Abbas said Jordan and Palestine were keen on the success of the Palestinian reconciliation deal signed in Cairo.
