MADRID, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The planned address of Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont on Thursday has been suspended.

Puigdemont had been scheduled to speak at 1:30 p.m. local time, but shortly before he was due to appear, it was delayed to 2:30 p.m, then was suspended just minutes before it was due to begin.

There has been no reaction from the Spain's central government led by Mariano Rajoy, but the Spanish Socialist Party commented on Thursday that if regional elections were called, they would not approve the application of Article 155.

Meanwhile, the Spanish senate was set to meet on Thursday afternoon to discuss the application of Article 155 of the Spanish constitution which would see Catalonia's regional government sacked and the central government take control of some of the region's key institutions.
