BANJUL, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Gambia announced Thursday 3.9 million euros (4.5 million U.S. dollars) in funds for the integration of Gambian migrants back from Europe.

The presidency press office said the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has received the special fund. About 1,300 Gambian migrants have so far voluntarily returned to the West African country, said Amie Bojang-Sissoho, director of press and public relations at the presidential office.

"The International Organization for Migration receives 3.9 million euros from the EU (the European Union) on returnees' integration in The Gambia. The IOM works with the Ministry of Interior through technical working group to implement the project," she said.

"The government and its partners are working on a national migration policy which will spell out the comprehensive national response to migration and returnees' management," she added.

The Gambia with a population of less than 2 million is among the leading African sources of illegal migrants in Europe.
