LISBON, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Portugal and Spain will discuss the "problem" of how their common rivers are jointly managed next week, the Portuguese Minister for the Environment, Joao Pedro Matos Fernandes, told local reporters on Friday.

Discussions will take place when Portugal and Spain's joint water-management committee convenes in Porto on Monday and Tuesday.

Matos Fernandes described the meeting as routine, but admitted that joint-management had become a problem.

Spain has been accused of ignoring European Union directives and siphoning off excessive water from the River Tagus.

The source of the River Tagus is in central Spain while its mouth is in Portugal, near Lisbon.

With Portugal suffering from severe drought, a drying Tagus would have dire agricultural and environmental implications.
