MADRID, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Forty people were injured, some of them seriously, when the floor of a nightclub collapsed in the early hours of Sunday morning on the island of Tenerife, the most populated island of Spain.

Emergency services in the Canary Islands inform that the floor of the "Butterfly" discotheque in the town of Adeje in the southwestern part of the island of Tenerife gave way at about 02:30 a.m. local time.

The nightclub is situated in a commercial center in the busy tourist area known as the Playa de las Americas and the injured are from several countries, including Rumanians, Belgians and French.

Firemen worked for two and a half hours before all of the injured were evacuated and taken to hospitals in the area, while investigations are now underway to discover why the floor collapsed.
