Qatar warns of "dangerous" impact of U.S. decision on Jerusalem

DOHA, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Qatar on Wednesday warned of "dangerous repercussions" of a U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the state-run Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

During a regular cabinet meeting held on Wednesday evening, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani said the U.S. move could contradict with international law and legitimacy, in addition to all the peace efforts based on a two-state solution.

U.S. President Donald Trump, in a controveorsial move, announced Wednesday to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and relocate the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Sheikh Abdullah said the Qatari cabinet called on the U.S. administration not to take the step on Jerusalem, and put pressure on the Israeli government.

The cabinet also reaffirmed Qatar's efforts to support the Palestinian people's rights of establishing an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Qatar will support Palestinians to protect their national and legitimate rights, it added.

On Tuesday, Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received a written message from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who briefed on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories ahead of the U.S. decision on Jerusalem.
