DAMASCUS, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian presidential office slammed the U.S. missile attack on a Syrian airbase as "reckless and irresponsible."

In a statement, the presidential office said the attack reflects the "narrow vision and political and military blindness by the U.S. regarding the reality."

It added that the U.S. was "naively driven by a frantic, fake propaganda campaign which fueled the arrogance of the U.S. administration to carry out such political and military orgy."

"The U.S. outrageous act through targeting an air base of a state of sovereignty is a stark sign that the deep policies of the consecutive U.S. administrations in terms of targeting countries, the subjugating of peoples and attempting to dominate the world, won't change," the statement said.

It noted that this aggression has only increased the determination of Syria in striking the terrorists.

Earlier in the day, the U.S. launched missile attacks on the Shayrat airbase in Homs province in central Syria, in retaliation to the alleged chemical attack on a rebel-held town in the northwestern province of Idlib.

Nearly 60 Tomahawk missiles struck the airbase, nearly destroying it completely, killing six Syrian soldiers, nine civilians, including four children, and destroying nine Syrian warplanes.

The U.S. administration said the attack on the air base comes in retaliation to the strikes by the Syrian air force on the town of Khan Sheikhoun.

Activists accused the Syrian army of firing toxic gas on the town, killing 70 people, while the Syrian army said the strike targeted an arm depot containing toxic gas, blaming the rebels for storing such materials.
