TOKYO, April 30 (Xinhua) -- A male climber was confirmed dead after being hit by an avalanche on Sunday in Toyama prefecture, central Japan.

The avalanche was believed to have occurred around 2:00 p.m. local time (0500 GMT) at Mt. Tsurugi, one of the highest peaks in the Hida Mountains which stretch through Nagano, Toyama and Gifu prefectures in central Japan.

The man was spotted by helicopters of the local mountain rescue force and was confirmed dead three hours after being sent to a local hospital.

Police said that it had been sunny and the temperature had been rising Sunday morning at the mountain area where the accident happened.

They are still trying to confirm the identity of the man, said local police.

Earlier in the week, two men were hit by an avalanche at Mt. Shirouma-dake in the Hida Mountains in Nagano prefecture and one of the men was still missing.
