DAMASCUS, May 2 (Xinhua) -- At least 53 civilians were killed and many more wounded on Tuesday, when the Islamic State (IS) group attacked a refugee camp in the country's northeastern province of Hasakah, pro-government Sham FM radio reported.

The IS militants attacked one of the refugee camps for displaced Syrians and Iraqis in the Rajem Salibi area in the countryside of Hasakah, said the report.

Citing medical sources in the province, the report said 10 Iraqis who were at the camp were wounded and transported to a hospital in Hasakah.

The report said IS herded a large number of families from the camp toward the city of Markadeh in the southern countryside of Hasakah and also to the IS-held Bukamal city in Deir al-Zour for reprisal.

It wasn't clear what triggered the attack, but it comes as the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were advancing against IS in the city of Tabqa in northern Syria.

Activists said the attack of IS on the camp comes as the terror-designated group accused some of the people there of aiding the Kurdish-led groups.
