JERUSALEM, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Israeli police said they shot and killed a Palestinian woman after she allegedly tried to stab police officers in East Jerusalem's Old City.
The incident occurred near flashpoint Damascus Gate, where many of the stabbing attempts took place during the recent wave of violence.
Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement that the woman approached a police force that was guarding the area. "She apparently pulled out a knife towards the officers" before they shot her.
The woman, whose identity wasn't disclosed, died at the scene, Samri said.
Violence throughout the West Bank and Israel has claimed the lives of at least 245 Palestinians, 41 Israelis, two U.S. nationals, a Jordanian tourist, a British tourist, and two African asylum seekers.
Israel accuses the Palestinian National Authority of "inciting" the unrest. The Palestinians say it is the result of 50 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, home to more than five million Palestinians.
