NEW DELHI, June 25 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed in a cable car accident in Indian-controlled Kashmir Sunday, a senior police official said.
The accident took place in the resort town of Gulmarg when a tree fell between the two gondola (cable car) towers and snapped the cable, the official said, adding, "Four tourists and a local tour guide died on the spot in the impact."
Rescue operations are underway as hundreds of tourists are stranded in Gulmarg, the official said, adding that cable car service in the area has been temporarily stopped.
A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.
The cable car service of Gulmarg is hugely popular and draws thousands of people in summer.
