NEW DELHI, June 29 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and five others injured in a road accident in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, a senior police official said.

"The accident happened when a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) rammed into a mini-truck on National Highway number 74 in Sherkot area in the state's Bijnore district," he said.

While six people died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of all of them are said to be serious, the official said.

"The dead included five occupants of the SUV, who were returning from a marriage function, and the driver of the mini-truck. Their bodies have been sent for an autopsy," he said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents are caused often due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
