RIO DE JANEIRO, July 9 (Xinhua) -- One person died and three others were injured during clashes between football hooligans in Brazil.

Violence erupted outside the Sao Januario stadium in Rio de Janeiro late on Saturday after Flamengo defeated local rivals Vasco da Gama 1-0.

A 27-year-old man died after being shot in the throat while two others were being treated in hospital with gunshot wounds in their legs, police said.

Another person was hospitalized with cuts caused by shattered glass.

Fan violence has long plagued Brazilian football, particularly in the country' s two largest cities: Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

In February, a Rio court barred visiting fans from attending matches involving local clubs Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco da Gama and Botafogo. However the decision was overturned on appeal.
