ATHENS, July 11 (Xinhua) -- A fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue to the benefits of the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots can only be achieved based on the UN resolutions, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Tuesday

The words came as Tsipras briefed MPs in Athens on the developments regarding the efforts to reunite the Mediterranean island, according to Greek national news agency AMNA.

Greece continues to support Cyprus and future efforts to put an end to the island's division, the Greek prime minister stressed.

Following the failure to reach a settlement in the Swiss resort town after the latest round of UN-mediated negotiations, Greece and Turkey have been involved in a blame game.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 after Turkey occupied part of the territory in reaction to a coup by the military rulers of Greece at the time.

Talks held so far between leaders of the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots to reach an agreement for Cyprus' reunification have ended fruitless.
