China in third place at U18 world athletics out of over 160 nations and regions

NAIROBI, July 16 (Xinhua) -- China is currently lying in third place at the World Under 18 Athletics Championships that featured over 160 countries and regions and which concludes on Sunday in Nairobi.

China has won four gold, two silver and one bronze medals and is in number three position behind first-placed South Africa which has harvested four gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Cuba is in second position with four gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal at the global event that featured over 160 countries and regions.

China is also looking at a possible gold medal in the girls' triple jump event on Sunday after Tan Qiujiao topped the table in the semifinals with a jump of 13.16 meters on Friday, the third day of the event to qualify for the finals.

On Saturday, Yao Zhang won the country's first world U18 title in the 10,000m boys' race walk when he crossed the line in a time of 41:24.17 to clinch the gold medal.

"The race went as planned. My strategy was to follow in the first two kilometers of the race and then lead in the last two kilometers," Yao said during post-race interview.

Tan's teammate, Pan Youqi was placed in 9th position to also book a place and will also line up for the finals that will feature 18 athletes.

More Chinese athletes are lined up for the finals during the last day of the event. Yang Lucheng will participate in the boys' pole vult; Dai Qianqian and Cai Ching in the girls' javelin throw and Tao Yanan in the girls 200m.

Tao Zelng will feature in boys' 3,000m whereas China will also be represented in the 4x400m mixed relay.
