"War for the Planet of the Apes" tops North American box office in opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, July 16 (Xinhua) -- American film company 20th Century Fox's movie "War for the Planet of the Apes" nabbed the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated 56.5 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend.

"War for the Planet of the Apes" is the third installment in Fox's reboot of "Planet of the Apes". The science fiction film is directed by Matt Reeves and stars Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis and Steve Zahn. It follows the confrontation between the apes and the humans for control of Earth.

The latest "Apes" movie came in more than 20 percent behind the last installment, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," which was also directed by Matt Reeves and debuted to 72.6 million U.S. dollars in 2014. "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" was a box office success, grossing over 710 million U.S. dollars worldwide.

Sony's "Spider-Man: Homecoming" moved to the second place at the North American box office with an estimated 45.2 million U.S. dollars in its second weekend. The second reboot of the Spider-Man film have brought in more 208.2 million U.S. dollars after just 10 days in North America, according to studio figures collected by comScore.

Third place goes to Universal's "Despicable Me 3" with an estimated 18.9 million U.S. dollars. The animated sequel will have a three-week running total of 188 million to date through Sunday.

Sony's "Baby Driver" landed in the fourth place with an estimated 8.75 million U.S. dollars in its third weekend in North America. Lionsgate's "The Big Sick" finished fifth with an estimated 7.6 million U.S. dollars in its fourth weekend.
