PHNOM PENH, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The first national public speaking and debating competition "The Perspectives Cambodia" was held in Cambodia's capital of Phnom Penh on Saturday.

Sixteen candidates, shortlisted from 78 university students across the kingdom, were contesting in the final round at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia. The topics for the competition, which was sponsored by China's telecoms giant Huawei, focused on education, health, economy, culture, and information and communication technology.

Six finalists competed in public speaking, while 10 others, divided into two groups, contested in debating.

According to the results, the public speaking championship was awarded Rith Sanita, who is a junior at the Royal University of Law and Economy, while the debating championship was granted to the group called "Qualified Youth."

Each of the winners was awarded a Huawei-latest model smart phone and cash gift.

Ni Kai, sales vice president of Huawei Technologies (Cambodia), said the competition provided contestants an opportunity to test their oratorical skills and show their talents.

"Huawei is very pleased to sponsor this competition because it gives a chance to Cambodian youth to show their talents and abilities," he said.

The Perspectives Cambodia 2017 was supported by the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports.

"The competition will create the habit of courage among the Cambodian youth, encourage them to study and research hard, and make them speak and gesture in public properly," said Soeur Socheata, undersecretary of state of the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports.
