TIRANA, July 28 (Xinhua) -- A massive explosion took place Friday in a tourist resort in northwestern Albanian coastal city of Velipoja, leaving more than 20 people wounded, Albanian police sources confirmed.

The flames were caused from the explosion of a gas deposit in a restaurant kitchen, police said, citing preliminary reports.

Two of the wounded, the owner of the restaurant and his son were seriously wounded, suffering burns in around 40 percent of the body and are being treated at Tirana University Hospital.

The other wounded, mainly kitchen employees but also tourists who were at the restaurant, were admitted to hospital too.

Sources from Tirana Hospital said that they didn't suffer life-threatening injuries. However, they will stay at the hospital till their conditions are fully stabilized.

Police and civil emergency services made the evacuation of the tourist resort while police are working to shed light on the explosion.

Experts from the state technical inspectorate went to the scene and they have launched further investigations as to whether there are other similar cases, and will take measures to remove such gas tanks.
