HOUSTON, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Police in Tampa City of the southeastern U.S. state of Florida said a 4-year-old boy fatally shot himself at home by a gun he found in the house, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The boy, named as Ashton Gooding, fired the shots at about 5:45 p.m. local time (2145 GMT) on Sunday, the police said.

Found inside the house with severe gunshot wound, the boy was sent to Tampa General Hospital, where he died shortly after arriving.

Police cordoned off East Hanna Avenue -- where Gooding's house is located -- and were investigating the loaded gun they found in the house. Florida's State Attorney's Office also joined the probe.

The degree to which gun control should be legislated has long been a source of fierce disputes in the United States, in part due to the powerful lobbying might of the National Rifle Association located on the outskirts of Washington, D.C.

Lax vetting prior to gun purchasing has led to recurring shooting incidents in the country, including, in this case, premature death of youngsters who can easily approach the weapon.
