SOFIA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian customs seized 5,000 kg of acetic anhydride, a critical heroin precursor, at the Kalotina checkpoint near the country's border with Serbia, officials said here Thursday.
The chemical, filled in five plastic containers with a capacity of 1,000 liters each, was found on Wednesday evening during an X-ray examination of a Croatia-registered truck carrying solar panels from Croatia to Turkey, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a statement.
According to the NCA, the amount would be enough to produce two tons of heroin.
This is the largest amount of acetic anhydride found and seized at the Bulgarian border in 2017 so far, the NCA said.
It brought the country's total acetic anhydride seizures so far this year to 10,623 liters, the NCA said.
Attempts to smuggle this precursor through Bulgaria haven't taken place for more than 10 years, the NCA added.
