LUSAKA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government on Thursday announced that it has come up with regulations to provide guidance on people wishing to get dual citizenship.

Under the country's amended constitution assented to by President Edgar Lungu on January 5, 2016, citizens are free to acquire dual citizenship.

Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo said the regulations stipulating the requirements for one to obtain dual citizenship have been published under a statutory instrument issued by his ministry.

The regulations, he said, provides for procedures and fees required for application and subsequent acquisition of dual citizenship, he added.

Among the regulations, Zambians citizens intending to acquire citizenship of another country must notify the Chief Passport and Citizenship Officer or the nearest Zambian embassy after successfully acquiring the other citizenship.

The regulations further provide that persons who ceased to be Zambian citizens as a result of acquiring citizenship of another country but wish to become Zambian citizens again should also apply to Citizenship Board of Zambia for bestowal.

He told reporters during a press briefing that his ministry was now ready to start processing applications for dual citizenship.
