KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- At least five Taliban militants were killed after aircraft pounded the insurgents' hideout in the restive Chardara district of northern Afghanistan's Kunduz province on Thursday, district governor Zalmai Farooqi said.

"Acting upon intelligence report, the security forces' aircrafts targeted a Taliban hideout in Yatem village of Chardara district today morning killing five insurgents on the spot," Farooqi told Xinhua.

Farooqi also said the government would launch fresh offensive to wipe out insurgents and restore security in Chardara district.

Taliban militants who reportedly control major parts of Chardara district and have been attempting to overrun provincial capital Kunduz city, have not commented.
