TAIPEI, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's weather authority Monday issued sea and land warnings as Typhoon Hato moves closer to the island.

As of Monday afternoon, Hato, the 13th typhoon this year, was located about 380 kilometers east-southeast of Eluanbi, Taiwan's southernmost tip. It was moving in a west-northwesterly direction at a speed of 15-19 kilometers per hour, the weather agency said.

The storm's periphery is approaching Bashi Channel and will pose a threat to Taitung and Pingtung counties, according to data on the weather authority's website.

The storm will bring waves of rain to the eastern and southern parts of Taiwan, the agency noted, with thunderstorms expected in the north. Other areas can also expect sporadic rain.

The agency also forecast rogue waves in the waters off southeast Taiwan, as well as Hengchun Peninsula and the southwestern coast. It advised residents to avoid seaside activities in those areas.
