ISLAMABAD, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif will visit the United States in a few days for talks with his U.S. counterpart on bilateral and regional issues, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
The announcement came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced strategy for South Asia that focused on Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The U.S. Ambassador David Hale met the foreign minister Tuesday afternoon and briefed him about Trump's latest statement on the U.S. policy review on South Asia and Afghanistan, said the foreign ministry in a statement.
"Ambassador Hale conveyed that the Secretary of State Rex Tillerson looked forward to meeting the foreign minister in the next few days to have an in-depth discussion on the state of play in the bilateral relationship as well as the new U.S. policy on South Asia," said the statement.
Asif had accepted the invitation when the secretary of state called him on Aug. 14 and said he looked forward to his early interactions in Washington, it said, adding that the foreign minister reiterated Pakistan's perspective and desire for peace and stability in Afghanistan.
