BERLIN, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Alternative for Germany (AfD) politician Alice Weidel walked out of a "ZDF" television debate on Tuesday night.

During the programme held ahead of Germany's looming elections, Weidel became embroiled in a heated dispute with Christian Social Union (CSU) politician Andreas Scheuer.

Weidel accused Scheuer of attempting to legalize illegal immigration through integration measures. Scheuer responded by demanding that Weidel distance herself from "right-wing extremists" such as the Thuringian AfD leader Bjoern Hoecke in her party.

Hoecke has publicly criticized the presence of memorials against the Holocaust in the German capital Berlin.

Instead of denouncing her colleague Hoecke, however, Weidel stormed out of the studio under cajoles and applause from the audience.

Weidel is the AfD's candidate for the chancellorship in federal elections on September 24.
