KIEV, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Former Georgian President and ex-governor of Ukraine's Odessa region Mikheil Saakashvili has returned to Ukraine on Sunday, local media reported.
Saakashvili, who lost his Ukrainian citizenship in July, crossed the Ukrainian border from Poland surrounded by several hundreds of supporters, including a string of lawmakers.
The State Border Service of Ukraine said that the group had crossed the border at the checkpoint in Ukraine's western Lviv region unlawfully.
It added that clashes erupted between Saakashvili's supporters, police and border guards, injuring several officers.
"The crowd broke through the Shegeni checkpoint. A fight has begun. Now, it is difficult to even predict the consequences of this situation," Oleg Slobodyan, a spokesman for the State Border Service of Ukraine, wrote on Facebook.
While speaking with local reporters after crossing the border, Saakashvili said he will go to Ukraine's western city of Lviv to discuss a plan for his political future with supporters.
Earlier in the day, Saakashvili tried to travel to Ukraine by train, but the train was blocked from moving.
Saakashvili, 49, who served as Georgian president from 2008 to 2013, was granted Ukrainian citizenship in May 2015 and was appointed as governor of Ukraine's southern Odessa region.
On July 26, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko revoked Saakashvili's Ukrainian citizenship over allegedly submitting false information while applying for a passport.
Saakashvili, who was abroad since mid-July, refused to accept the loss of his Ukrainian citizenship, saying he would return to Ukraine to continue the political career.
On Sept. 5, Georgian Chief Prosecutor's Office has addressed Kiev to take extradition measures against Saakashvili if he enters Ukraine.
