HOUSTON, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The price for a gallon of gas is dropping for the first time since Hurricane Harvey, according to AAA Texas on Thursday.

The average price at the pump across the state is now 2.52 U.S. dollars per gallon. In Houston, the average price for a gallon of gas, 2.48 dollars, is 2 cents lower than it was a week ago.

AAA Texas says the drop is happening even though 11 refineries in Texas are either just restarting production or still inactive, which account for 17 percent of the nation's refining capacity.

The eventual increased production may help reduce gas prices further, but gas prices would need to drop by about 35 cents to reach pre-Harvey levels in Houston.

For more than 100 years, AAA has been a part of the American motoring scene. Today, AAA members enjoy a full spectrum of benefits including Roadside Assistance, travel planning, member discounts, and insurance services.

Harvey blew ashore on Aug. 25 as the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in more than 50 years, displacing more than 1 million and damaged some 200,000 houses in a path of destruction that stretches for more than 480 km. The Houston area was hit by severe flooding, after receiving about 1.4 meters of rain.
