ALGIERS, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Algerian army troops arrested three individuals over charges of offering support to terrorist groups in the province of Medea, 120 km southeastern Algiers, said a statement of Defense Ministry on Friday.
The source specified that the three suspects were arrested during an operation in the woods of Medea, as a Semenov automatic gun and a quantity of ammunition were retrieved.
The region of Medea is known by its dense forests providing safe refuge to terrorist groups since the early 1990s. However, the continuous anti-terrorism operations conducted by the Algerian army troops have eradicated many militants.
Located in a region plagued by unprecedented security and political instability, Algeria faces ongoing terrorist threats.
A few militants affiliated to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and recently established Daesh affiliate groups are still taking refuge in the dense woods in the north, and remote desert areas near the troubled Libya and Mali. Enditem
