BAGHDAD, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Three suicide bombers on Sunday attacked the U.S. forces in northern Iraq and they were killed by the U.S. troops, a Kurdish official website said.

The bombers attacked a military base housing U.S. forces in a village near Makhmour, located some 60 km southeast of Mosul, said the official website of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), a major Kurdish party in which the Iraqi President Fuad Masoum is a leading figure.

The U.S. troops killed two of the attackers and the third blew up himself, without causing casualties among the U.S. soldiers, the website quoted a local PUK leader Rashad Galali as saying.

Over 5,000 U.S. troops are deploying in Iraq, serving as trainers and advisers, in an attempt to help the country win the battle against Islamic State (IS) militants.

The troops are part of the U.S.-led international coalition that has also been conducting air raids against IS targets in both Iraq and Syria.
