JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A total of 13 tons of illicit drugs collected over the past two years was set on fire in Afghanistan eastern province of Nangarhar on Tuesday, provincial police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said.

"The seized drugs most of them opium poppy and hashish collected during series of operations by Afghan security forces from different parts of the relatively troubled province was set ablaze in a ceremony attended by provincial officials and locals," Rahimi told reporters here.

Although, the government has been fighting to check drug production and its trafficking, poppy cultivation is common in parts of Afghanistan.
