YANGON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has launched a tourism and cultural heritage preservation project for urban Yangon, the official Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported Friday.

With a financial assistance of 180,000 euros (213,169 U.S. dollars) from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), the project to preserve urban heritage in Yangon will be implemented by tender-winning Yangon Heritage Trust.

According to the Yangon Heritage Trust, the city will be modernized without any damage to cultural heritage.

The authorities have been implementing the Tourism and Cultural Heritage - Phase 1 since September and it is likely to finish in August 2018.

In accordance with the surveys conducted by the Yangon Heritage Trust, there are about 400 to 600 heritage buildings in the former capital city.

Of them, some unused state-owned buildings will be preserved and renovated to be used for public welfare after getting approval from the government.
