NEW DELHI, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and one injured after a speeding truck ploughed into a group of workers in southern India Friday, police said.

"The accident occurred in the wee hours of the day in Kochi city of Kerala state when the workers were working for the construction of Metro railway there," a police official said.

The four workers were soon rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where three died of their injuries while one is still fighting for his life, he said.

Eye-witnesses told cops that the driver of the truck lost control of the speeding vehicle that led to the accident near the city's Muttam Yard.

A probe has been ordered into the incident and a manhunt also launched to track down the truck driver who sped away after the accident, the official said.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world, mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
