HOUSTON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Hurricane Harvey took the lives of at least 88 in the U.S. state of Texas directly or indirectly, preliminary numbers released by the Department of State Health Services showed on Friday.

The majority of deaths, or 62, were caused by wind, rain and floods, which led to drownings or trees falling on people.

Meanwhile, 26 deaths were caused by "unsafe or unhealthy conditions" related to the loss or disruption of services such as utilities, transportation and medical care.

The agency said another five deaths could be related to Harvey, but the total death toll from Harvey would not be available until next year.

Harvey blew ashore on Aug. 25 as the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in more than 50 years, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and damaging some 200,000 houses in the path of destruction that stretched for more than 480 km. The Houston area was hit by severe flooding after receiving heavy rain.
