CHICAGO, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Thick oil has been found on a stretch of Chicago River and investigators from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were working to find the source of the oil.

The stretch, known as Bubbly Creek in southern suburbs of Chicago and being a popular spot for Chicago rowers, has been closed to all people and vessels, Chicago Tribune newspaper quoted the U.S. Coast Guard as saying Friday.

The U.S. Coast Guard has established a safety zone at the creek, but the safety zone will not affect the south branch of the Chicago River, Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, or the associated turning basin, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The Environmental Protection Agency is coordinating the recovery and cleanup.
