HERAT, Afghanistan, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- The NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) mission began providing training to units of the Afghan National Army in the western Herat province on Sunday, said an army commander in the western region, Gen. Mohammad Nasir Hedayat.

"In the training which began today, hundreds of the personnel of the national army would learn the ways and means on how to fight terrorists on the mountains, streets and in residential areas," Hedayat told Xinhua.

The course, he said, would continue for four weeks.

More than 14,000 NATO-led RS forces are presently serving in Afghanistan to provide training and advising to the Afghan security forces.

The number of NATO-led RS forces is expected to go up as U.S. and NATO member states are expected to send a few thousand more troops to insurgency-hit Afghanistan.
