BISHKEK, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Russia needs to intervene and help settle the row between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev said here on Monday.

During a press conference, Atambayev said that recently he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I told him frankly: if you need the EEU (Eurasian Economic Union), you cannot continue to watch calmly as it is being ruined," the Kyrgyz leader said.

He also said that this situation with Astana will be adjusted, as it is in the interests not only of Kazakhstan, but also of Russia.

"I do not regret that Kyrgyzstan has joined the EEU, and Kyrgyzstan is not going to withdraw from this union. However, the leaders of countries should also think about this," Atambayev said.

The relations between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan have deteriorated after Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev received Kyrgyz opposition candidate Omurbek Babanov before presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan in October.

After Atambayev accused Kazakhstan of interfering in the internal affairs of his country, Kazakhstan has tightened the control of the border with Kyrgyzstan starting from Oct. 10.

Later, the two sides managed to solve the problem of border crossing between the two countries for citizens and vehicles carrying regular passenger transportation. However, there is still a problem for trucks with goods.
