COLOMBO, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Road accidents claimed as many as 2,800 lives in Sri Lanka so far this year and more than half of the amounts was caused by incidents involving motor bikes and three-wheelers, an official said on Wednesday.
The Chairman of National Council for Road Safety, Sisira Kodagoda, said motor-bikes were responsible for 30 percent of fatalities and three-wheelers for 20 percent.
The rest was caused by other vehicles, and the increase of motor traffics on roads is also a major reason for the high number of accidents in Sri Lanka, Kodagoda said.
He said 3,124 persons died in the 39,199 road accidents reported last year in Sri Lanka.
